Our Supporters Rallied For IRV

We're Fighting the Ban Bill!

When we put out requests for calls and emails, you responded! Thank you all!

But the challenge is not over! Our efforts will need to continue as the ban bills (SB 310 and HB 817) work their way through the legislative process. The bills’ progress so far is outlined below:

Legislative history of SB 310, authored by Sen. Hughes - bans preferential voting (which includes IRV) in all elections.

  • February 3 - Referred to State Affairs Committee
  • March 24 - Considered public testimony
  • March 26 - Unanimous vote favorably out of committee

Legislative history of HB 817, authored by Rep. Cain - bans preferential voting (which includes IRV) in all elections. HB 817 is similar to SB 310.

  • March 5 - Referred to Elections Committee
  • March 27 - Considered public testimony
  • April 3 - Reported favorably out of committee

None of the bills that recommend preferential voting in certain elections or for certain voters (e.g., military and overseas) have been given a public hearing.

Legislators are listening to you!!

Several of you have let us know that our state legislators are listening. Your emails and calls are shaping what is happening in real time. We received this from one of the committee members:

"Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns regarding HB 817. As a legislative office, we strive to remain as accessible and responsive as possible, and your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Our office has recorded your support for accountable and efficient elections in our legislative tracking system. I appreciate hearing from you, as I share your opposition to HB 817 and the constraints it imposes on our local elected officials. As Vice Chair of the Election Committee, I was proud to cast a ‘no’ vote on this bill, as I believe it is crucial not to limit the resources available to local officials in fulfilling their duties."

There will be more requests for your help to stop these ban bills from passing as they move forward. Please continue your awesome support!

West Virginia’s RCV Ban Would Be Self-Defeating

West Virginia’s lawmakers are considering Senate Bill 490, which would prohibit the use of ranked-choice voting (RCV) statewide.

Why not just call RCV Runoff Elections?

Why not just call RCV Runoff Elections?

Runoff elections in a digital age imply that computers and technology create instant outcomes, and Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) is no exception when it comes to facilitating runoffs if no candidate secures an outright majority of the votes.
