THE SCOOP: IRV FOR TEXAS

IRV for Texas is already working with the Texas Legislature to bring Instant Runoff Voting to Texas

The 89th Texas Legislative Session opened on Tuesday, January 14.  Our efforts for this legislative season must conclude by early May; there is no time to waste!  Advocates are working now with representatives of both major political parties to modernize the Election Code.  Our work, if adopted by the Texas Legislature, would enable military and overseas voters to use Instant Runoff Voting, and to permit its use in party primaries, special elections, and non-partisan municipal elections.

Our "boots on the ground" approach includes both citizen participation and engagement with Texas legislators. During the session, we will share periodic alerts requesting that you contact your legislators regarding IRV. There is power in numbers!  Legislators need and want to hear from their constituents.

To stay proactively informed, go to the Texas Legislature Online (TLO) website embedded below.  It provides information on house and senate members, committees, and bills.  This tool enables you to follow the progress of one or more bills and is also a handy way to track a personalized list of bills that interests you.

If you want to learn more about the process by which bills become law, you will find the chart below very informative.

Ranked-choice voting: A solution for fairer elections and broader representation - The Carolina Journal

Recent articles in The Carolina Journal highlight critical challenges within our electoral system, including the role of third-party candidates in shaping election outcomes and the barriers they face in gaining ballot access.  From concerns about "spoiler" dynamics to delays by the North Carolina State Board of Elections in certifying third-party candidates, these issues expose the limitations of our current plurality voting system.  Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) offers a powerful and non-partisan solution to address these concerns while enhancing fairness and representation.

Justin Trudeau's 'One Regret' Is Not Implementing Ranked Choice Voting in Canada - Reason

"I do wish that we'd been able to change the way we elect our governments in this country so that people could simply choose a second choice or a third choice on the same ballot," Trudeau said in his resignation statement earlier this year.

These DC Food Activists Were Behind the Ranked-Choice-Voting Initiative- Washingtonian

In November, DC residents overwhelmingly voted for Initiative 83, which could bring ranked-choice voting to the city.  It was a major victory for its supporters, yet few voters who helped pass I-83 knew where the idea had been born: In a Northeast DC vegetable patch.
