THE SCOOP: IRV FOR TEXAS

IRV for Texas is already working with the Texas Legislature to bring Instant Runoff Voting to Texas

The 89th Texas Legislative Session begins Tuesday, January 14.  IRV is working with the Texas Legislature to update the Election Code to enable military and overseas voters to use Instant Runoff Voting, and to permit the use of Instant Runoff Voting in party primaries, special elections, and non-partisan municipal elections.

Our grass roots approach depends on citizen participation and engagement with Texas legislators. During the session, we will periodically send out action alerts asking you to contact your legislators regarding something going on in the legislature about IRV. Please respond to these alerts by following the request and engaging with the people you elected to represent you in the Texas Legislature!

What We Are Reading

Local runoff election, democracy - The Baytown Sun

People are tired of voting. With six elections in one year, voter fatigue is understandable. If Texas had employed a ranked choice system in 2024, there would have only  been three elections instead of six.

Winning is the only thing: Ranked choice voting works for conservatives when they use it - Cardinal News

Before implementing RCV for their 2021 statewide nomination contests, Virginia Republicans hadn't won a statewide race in 12 years. Using RCV, they nominated Glenn Youngkin in a process that grew and unified their party leading to a historic sweep of governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general.

Low Turnout and High Cost in Primary Runoffs, 1994-2024 - FairVote

FairVote has tracked all federal primary runoff elections since 1994.  This report documents our findings and highlights how issues with runoff affected the 2024 elections. It also shows how ranked choice voting  also known as "instant runoff voting" - offers a better, faster, cheaper alternative.
